y al largo y suave trueno del mar;

If Death is kind

Perhaps if Death is kind, and there can be returning,
We will come back to earth some fragrant night,
And take these lanes to find the sea, and bending
Breathe the same honeysuckle, low and white.

We will come down at night to these resounding beaches
And the long gentle thunder of the sea,
Here for a single hour in the wide starlight
We shall be happy, for the dead are free.

A maiden

Oh if I were the velvet rose
Upon the red rose vine,
I'd climb to touch his window
And make his casement fine.

And if I were the little bird
That twitters on the tree,
All day I'd sing my love for him
Till he should harken me.

But since I am a maiden
I go with downcast eyes,
And he will never hear the songs
That he has turned to sighs.

And since I am a maiden
My love will never know
That I could kiss him with a mouth
More red than roses blow.

I thought of you

I thought of you and how you love this beauty,
And walking up the long beach all alone
I heard the waves breaking in measured thunder
As you and I once heard their monotone.

Around me were the echoing dunes, beyond me
The cold and sparkling silver of the sea --
We two will pass through death and ages lengthen
Before you hear that sound again with me.

Un azulejo de Sarah Teasdale version de Pablo Queralt.

Un azulejo invernal

Con nitidez la nieve brillante susurraba,

crujiendo bajo nuestros pies;

nuestras sombras danzaban

fantásticas formas de un azul intenso.

Al otro lado del lago los esquiadores

volaban de un lado al otro,

trazando con giros bruscos

una red frágil invisible.

En éxtasis la tierra

bebía su luz plateada del sol;

en éxtasis los esquiadores

bebían el vino de la velocidad;

A winter bluejay

Crisply the bright snow whispered,
Crunching beneath our feet;
Behind us as we walked along the parkway,
Our shadows danced,
Fantastic shapes in vivid blue.
Across the lake the skaters
Flew to and fro,
With sharp turns weaving
A frail invisible net.
In ecstacy the earth
Drank the silver sunlight;
In ecstacy the skaters
Drank the wine of speed;
In ecstacy we laughed
Drinking the wine of love.
Had not the music of our joy
Sounded its highest note?
But no,
For suddenly, with lifted eyes you said,
"Oh look!"
There, on the black bough of a snow flecked maple,
Fearless and gay as our love,
A bluejay cocked his crest!
Oh who can tell the range of joy
Or set the bounds of beauty?

No me importatra de Sarah Teasdale traduce Pablo Queralt.

No me importará

no me importará.

I shall not care

When I am dead and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Though you shall lean above me broken-hearted,
I shall not care.

I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rain bends down the bough;
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted
Than you are now.

Mensaje de Sarah Teasdale version Pablo Queralt.

Mensaje

Escuché un grito en la noche,

llegó desde mil millas,

agudo como un destello de luz,

mi nombre, mi nombre!

Fue tu voz la que escuché,

despertaste y me amaste tanto-

te devuelvo estas palabras,

lo sé, lo sé!

Message

I heard a cry in the night,
A thousand miles it came,
Sharp as a flash of light,
My name, my name!

It was your voice I heard,
You waked and loved me so --
I send you back this word,
I know, I know!

The river

I came from the sunny valleys
And sought for the open sea,
For I thought in its gray expanses
My peace would come to me.

I came at last to the ocean
And found it wild and black,
And I cried to the windless valleys,
"Be kind and take me back!"

But the thirsty tide ran inland,
And the salt waves drank of me,
And I who was fresh as the rainfall
Am bitter as the sea.

tus ojos me dijeron esa noche

Spring rain

I thought I had forgotten,
But it all came back again
To-night with the first spring thunder
In a rush of rain.

I remembered a darkened doorway
Where we stood while the storm swept by,
Thunder gripping the earth
And lightning scrawled on the sky.

The passing motor busses swayed,
For the street was a river of rain,
Lashed into little golden waves
In the lamp light's stain.

With the wild spring rain and thunder
My heart was wild and gay;
Your eyes said more to me that night
Than your lips would ever say..

I thought I had forgotten,
But it all came back again
To-night with the first spring thunder
In a rush of rain.

The Love that Goes A-begging from Sonnets to Duse, 1907

Oh Loves there are that enter in,
And Loves there are that wait,
And Loves that sit a-weeping
Whose joy will come too late.

For some there be that ope their doors,
And some there be that close,
And Love must go a-begging,
But whither, no one knows.

Deseos de Sarah Teasdale version de Pablo Queralt

Deseos

Deseo tantas cosas

que nunca se harán realidad,

y sin embargo las deseo tanto

que creo podrían cumplirse y tú?

Quiero un gatito que sea suave,

manso y dulce,

y cada día miro y espero

encontrar uno en la calle.

Pero la niñera dice” vamos sigue andando,

no te quedes ahí mirando así” ;

yo solo miro con todo

tratando de encontrar a mi gato.

Y después quiero un globo azul

que intente salir volando,

pensé que si deseaba con fuerza

algún día llegaría.

Una vez cuando estaba en el parque,

supe que estaría frente

al viejo reloj de casa,

esperándome allí.

Y apenas regresamos a casa,

me apresuré por el vestíbulo

y miré junto al viejo y gran reloj,

no estaba allí en absoluto.

Creo que nunca más pediré un deseo-

pero entonces que haré?

Pedir deseos es muy divertido,

aunque no se hagan realidad.

02. Wishes from Sonnets to Duse, 1907

I wish for such a lot of things
That never will come true--
And yet I want them all so much
I think they might, don't you?

I want a little kitty-cat
That's soft and tame and sweet,
And every day I watch and hope
I'll find one in the street.

But nursie says, "Come, walk along,
"Don't stand and stare like that"--
I'm only looking hard and hard
To try to find my cat.

And then I want a blue balloon
That tries to fly away,
I thought if I wished hard enough
That it would come some day.

One time when I was in the park
I knew that it would be
Beside the big old clock at home
A-waiting there for me--

And soon as we got home again,
I hurried thro' the hall,
And looked beside the big old clock--
It wasn't there at all.

I think I'll never wish again--
But then, what shall I do?
The wishes are a lot of fun
Altho' they don't come true.

Dusk in Autumn from Sonnets to Duse, 1907

A scimitar is a short sword with a curved blade.

The moon is like a scimitar,.
A little silver scimitar,
A-drifting down the sky.
And near beside it is a star,
A timid twinkling golden star,
That watches like an eye.

And thro' the nursery window-pane
The witches have a fire again,
Just like the ones we make,--
And now I know they're having tea,
I wish they'd give a cup to me,
With witches' currant cake.

Cancionde ensueño de Sarah Teasdale version de Pablo Queralt.

Canción de ensueño

Arranqué una campanilla de invierno en primavera

y la apreté con demasiada fuerza en mi mano;

el calor dañó aquel ser delicado,

y me dio pena verlo marchitarse.

y la posé sobre su pecho frío como la nieve;

Dream Song from Sonnets to Duse, 1907

I plucked a snow-drop in the spring,
And in my hand too closely pressed;
The warmth had hurt the tender thing,
I grieved to see it withering.

I gave my love a poppy red,
And laid it on her snow-cold breast;
But poppies need a warmer bed,
We wept to find the flower was dead.

pero no quisieron ponerlo en mis manos;

Grandfather's Love from Helen of Troy And Other Poems, 1911

They said he sent his love to me,

They wouldn't put it in my hand,
And when I asked them where it was
      They said I couldn't understand.

I thought they must have hidden it,
I hunted for it all the day,
And when I told them so at night
They smiled and turned their heads away.

They say that love is something kind,
That I can never see or touch.
I wish he'd sent me something else,
I like his cough-drops twice as much.

La luna bondadosa de Sarah Teasdale version Pablo Queralt.

La luna bondadosa

Creo que la luna es muy bondadosa

al tomarse molestias solo por mí,

vino conmigo desde casa

para hacerme compañía.

Iba tan rápido como yo podía correr;

Pero aquí está sobre su tejado;

quizás piense que no está bien

que yo vaya lejos tan sola,

aunque mamá dijo que podía.

The Kind Moon from Helen of Troy And Other Poems, 1911

I think the moon is very kind
To take such trouble just for me.
He came along with me from home
      To keep me company.

He went as fast as I could run;
I wonder how he crossed the sky?
I'm sure he hasn't legs and feet
      Or any wings to fly.

Yet here he is above their roof;
Perhaps he thinks it isn't right
For me to go so far alone,
      Tho' mother said I might.
